By compiling statistics gathered from thousands of transplants, surgeons are now able to better predict the success of a transplant based on various factors such as the recipient’s original diagnosis, the ages of both donor and recipient, and the donor’s serum creatinine levels.

In total, 18 different variables were assessed from cases compiled by UNOS and studied by the Cleveland Clinic.

The hope is that improved prediction will lead to better matching of organs to recipients and more individualized treatment plans for the post-transplant period.
