CRAIG’S LIST..SHOPPING FOR A KIDNEY

Click the link “Shopping for a Kidney” to view the CNN video on how a patient’s family used a unique approach to finding a match for their pre-dialysis loved one—through Craigslist. The match came from a perfect stranger in a completely different part of the country.

A good Samaritan, Dawn Verdick (shown in the picture at right), clicked on Craigslist looking for a volunteer project and saw the family’s plea. A longtime blood donor, she was inspired to reach out across 3,000 miles to give this incredible gift to someone she didn’t even know.

Surprising? Yes. But even more surprising—over 100 people responded to the request! Will this become a growing trend?

Currently, about 75% of living kidney donations come from family members. But the number of friends—and even strangers—donating kidneys is on the rise.

Should you consider an approach like this? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Daniel Flood, the recipient, is thriving and full of gratitude—thanks to the kindness of a stranger and the ingenuity of his three daughters.
