Dr. Carlos Bejar, of The Kidney Group, poses with Steven, one of our Kidney Group Peritoneal Dialysis Program’s group of patients that have successfully undergone gastric bypass at The University of Miami in collaboration with The Kidney Group. Steven made his weight goal for transplant listing within 6 weeks of surgery, and looks and feels great. In his case, most of his medications were able to be discontinued after the weight loss. I can tell you the entire team at The Kidney Group loves Steven, who is a fantastic patient in every way, and we eagerly await his transplant. He has taken the time to counsel other PD patients contemplating the same surgery. Truthfully, when patients see him at PD clinic-looking trim and feeling great-it inspires others who cannot be listed for a transplant because of not reaching the prescribed weight goal-and we admit-weight loss on dialysis is a tough thing to do.
