The “Big 6” Foods for Causing Elevated Potassium in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

In our experience these six foods are common causes of elevated potassium in our renal failure patients. Before you totally revamp your diet, we discuss how you eat most days and how often these foods are consumed. Very frequently one or two of them are the ones that need to be eliminated. They are:

Avocados,
Tomatoes,
Oranges,
Melons,
Potatoes,
Bananas.

If you find your potassium is elevated, discuss eliminating one or more of these foods with your nephrologist, and then retest your potassium. In some cases, a dietitian will be needed to fine tune your optimal results, but MANY find success with elimination of these foods.
