Kidney group Transplant Nephrologist, Dr. Marco Ladino, flanked by 2 students interested in pursuing Medicine (ok-and we hope Nephrology). Both girls have close family members who battle kidney disease and dialysis. Molly’s (left) relative received a transplant, and Francesca’s (she is a recent University of Miami graduate) is hoping to receive one soon.
If you speak to our own doctors, something specific picqued their own interest (as young students) in Nephrology. We believe their personal backgrounds make Nephrology a potential interest for both girls. As all Nephrologists know, American medical students overwhelmingly DO NOT choose Nephrology as a sub-speciality. This is unfortunate because it is an area more and more in demand as the incidence of CKD swells, and combines the acute excitement of Critical Care with the more chronic aspects of dialysis which affords opportunity for more meaningful relationships with patients.
In any case, The KG staff was impressed with their brightness, enthusiasm and general grasp of the kidney.
Thank you to Drs. Ladino and Valle for being their mentors. — at The Kidney Group (EAST) American Room.
