When a Patient is “Too Overweight” For a Transplant

Kidney Group knows the answer, and worked on a solution to the dilemma of patients deemed too heavy for transplant. For years we worked with patients, nutritionists, fitness coaches, exercise specialists and #WeightWatchers (which we endorse), but to tell a person on #Peritoneal #Dialysis, who is working, caring for a family, doing their own dialysis, and getting sugar in their belly to lose weight was nearly fruitless, and we watch young people not get that kidney. Our study on #Gastric #Bypass in #PD patients trying to qualify for #transplant, in conjunction with The University of #Miami #Bariatric Department(all while NEVER stopping PD) was the FIRST of it’s kind, and it was successful. It will be published in “Peritoneal Dialysis International” this month. Every participant in the study qualified for transplant, and one has been transplant. Our entire PD group has a transplant rate EIGHT times the National average.

Why? We don’t stop at “This seems like it’s going to be difficult to get this person qualified”. It really is that simple.
