It’s not just your kidneys that are affected by diabetes—many of the body’s organs can be impacted. Your best defense is to be aware of the potential damage and to stay vigilant for any signs of it.

Keeping your diabetes under tight control is absolutely essential. If you have Type 2 diabetes—as do the overwhelming majority of diabetics—then it’s time to take real action:

  • Lose weight. Really lose weight.

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake.

  • Exercise regularly and stay active.

  • Make fitness a priority.

For our diabetic patients, there are medications available that can help protect the kidneys from damage. We also carefully monitor your 24-hour urine for signs of increasing proteinuria, an early warning sign of kidney problems.

There’s a lot we can do to help keep your kidneys healthy despite diabetes—especially if we start early.

It takes teamwork. Let’s do this together.
