Several patients have called, alarmed with news reports that patients with #kidney stones face a higher incidence of end stage renal disease ( #ESRD ). While studies indicate, for various reasons, a need for higher vigilence in persons with history of kidney stones, particularly those with stones prior to age 50-especially woman, the absolute risk of these patients progressing to ESRD is still low. Again, the mainstream media may gloss over the “low” part, needlessly frightening patients with a history of stones. Regular followups to catch any issues early is key as is prevention of stones, something the KG are experts at.
An important point from the article is as follows:”It’s important to note that the vast majority of people with kidney stones won’t develop permanent kidney damage,” said study co-author Tonelli.
“But a few will, and that’s why it’s important for people with stones to get proper follow-up care- to reduce their risk of another stone, and to detect kidney damage if it has occurred.”
People could try to decrease the likelihood of the development of kidney stones by decreasing their sodium intake, drinking more water and, if needed, taking certain medication, the researchers suggest.
